Infrastructure Protects Drivers Who Speed into Bike Lanes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I attended the Grand Opening of the new South Park Bridge.\u00a0 South Park is a neighborhood in Seattle on the other side of the Duwamish River from Georgetown.\u00a0 I lived there for almost 14 years and know how important this link is to the community.\u00a0 I was happy to see the bridge finally open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3853.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" pedestrian and transit advocates often criticize road projects for their focus on individual car travel.\u00a0 The South Park Bridge will benefit trucks, buses, emergency services, as well as single occupancy motor vehicles, and has some significant improvements over the bridge it replaced.\u00a0 The sidewalks are much safer and there are marked bike lanes on both sides of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3850.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-595 the thing that makes no sense to me.\u00a0 To the right of the bike lane, the area that is supposed to be safe for bicyclists to ride, there is a giant impact absorber.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3854.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-593 city street with, at this time, a 30 mph speed limit.\u00a0 Someone decided that, just in case drivers veer out of their lane and drive through the bike lane, they should be protected from a high-impact, high speed collision by this impact absorbing device.\u00a0 People inside steel cages with seat belts and air bags.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/lets-connectseattle.html\">You on the bike&#8230; good luck.\u00a0 And wear your helmet&#8230; is this the message our infrastructure should
