Bicyclists Help Drivers!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The tired rhetoric of a &#8220;war on cars&#8221; has yet to be retired.\u00a0 Recently, an on-line commenter said this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/war-on-cars-comment.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-580\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/war-on-cars-comment.jpg?resize=392%2C75\" alt=\"war on cars comment\" width=\"392\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/war-on-cars-comment.jpg?w=392&amp;ssl=1 392w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/war-on-cars-comment.jpg?resize=300%2C57&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.komonews.com\/news\/local\/Car-hits-seriously-injures-two-pedestrians-in-Seattle-260037471.html\">this<\/a> sad new item:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/news.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-581\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/news.jpg?resize=659%2C541\" alt=\"news\" width=\"659\" height=\"541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/news.jpg?w=659&amp;ssl=1 659w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/news.jpg?resize=300%2C246&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/amicus_personae\/bike_law_Seattle.html\">Instead of using inflammatory rhetoric or vehicles as weapons, people who drive and people who ride should both try to actually help each other out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How do we do that?\u00a0 It&#8217;s easy.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s one example.\u00a0 Often, when I am at a stop light on my bike, a car will pull up behind me wanting to make a right turn on red.\u00a0 I move over to the left and frequently get a &#8220;thank you&#8221; or a thumbs up.\u00a0 Once, however, I almost got hit by a car sprinting out in the left lane as the light turned green, so be careful being nice&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, at a dangerous intersection for bicyclists underneath the West Seattle Bridge, I prevented a head-on collision between two cars.\u00a0 The area looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/area.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-583 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/area-1024x768.jpg?resize=470%2C352\" alt=\"area\" width=\"470\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/area.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/area.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/area.jpg?resize=700%2C525&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/area.jpg?w=1632&amp;ssl=1 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s frequently dicey for bicyclists in the crosswalk on the left, because cars come around the bend at a high speed and many drivers don&#8217;t expect a crosswalk or just don&#8217;t believe that they have a duty to yield to bicyclists in it.\u00a0 I always slow down and stick my neck out to look left before crossing.<\/p>\n<p>As I was doing this, I saw a rental car enter this one-way street from my right.\u00a0 There is a sign that says do not enter:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/problem.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-585 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/problem-1024x768.jpg?resize=470%2C352\" alt=\"problem\" width=\"470\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/problem.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/problem.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/problem.jpg?resize=700%2C525&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/problem.jpg?w=1632&amp;ssl=1 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there is also this, much larger, sign before it:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/confusion.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-586 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/confusion-1024x768.jpg?resize=470%2C352\" alt=\"confusion\" width=\"470\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/confusion.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/confusion.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/confusion.jpg?resize=700%2C525&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/confusion.jpg?w=1632&amp;ssl=1 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It can be confusing, especially for an out-of-towner.\u00a0 &#8220;No No NO!&#8221; I yelled, &#8220;wrong way!&#8221;\u00a0 The driver slowed, then stopped, and he began backing out just as another driver zipped around the corner.\u00a0 One car on car (collateral damage in the War on Cars?) collision avoided, thanks to a bicyclist.<\/p>\n<p>I know I&#8217;m not the only to help out people who happen to be driving rather than riding.\u00a0 But fewer of us have made movies about it.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, some friends and I made &#8220;Bike Man Versus the Fossil&#8221;, a two minute unedited Super-8 film.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty awesome, if I do say so myself, and it&#8217;s got a great message:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bike Man vs The Fossil (lo-fi)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fnxFwjcoKFM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
