{"id":494,"date":"2013-12-18T10:58:02","date_gmt":"2013-12-18T17:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/?p=494"},"modified":"2021-05-22T23:57:27","modified_gmt":"2021-05-23T06:57:27","slug":"a-bad-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/a-bad-sign.html","title":{"rendered":"A Bad Sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, while commuting to work near where another bicycle commuter was killed earlier this year, I saw multiple SDOT trucks.\u00a0 One of these trucks was parked on the sidewalk that I and many other bicyclists use when coming from the West Seattle Bridge.\u00a0 This resulted in bicyclists taking to the street, albeit the wrong-way.\u00a0 In fact, I found myself &#8220;salmoning&#8221; on the bike lane&#8230; Ooops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-495 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"IMG_2896\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896.jpg?resize=500%2C375&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2896.jpg?w=3000&amp;ssl=1 3000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, I made this unwise and illegal move (not unlike the bicyclist pictured above) without incident.\u00a0 Why is SDOT creating this dangerous situation?\u00a0 Why, to add safety signage, of course.\u00a0 This:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2897.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-496\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2897-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"IMG_2897\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2897.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2897.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2897.jpg?resize=375%2C500&amp;ssl=1 375w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_2897.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unfortunately, this pedestrian sign pointing at a crosswalk only reinforces the INCORRECT understanding that many people (including far too many police officers) have that crosswalks are for pedestrians and not for bicycles.\u00a0 This is the actual law:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">The operator of an approaching vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian or bicycle to cross the roadway within an unmarked or marked crosswalk when the pedestrian or bicycle is upon or within one lane of the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning.
