{"id":483,"date":"2013-11-06T10:55:58","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T17:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/?p=483"},"modified":"2021-05-23T00:17:43","modified_gmt":"2021-05-23T07:17:43","slug":"elections-and-the-war-on-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/elections-and-the-war-on-cars.html","title":{"rendered":"Elections and the so-called War on Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So it looks like Seattle&#8217;s Mayor McGinn will lose to Ed Murray. <a href=\"http:\/\/vote.wa.gov\/results\/current\/king\/\">Here <\/a>are the current returns in King County.<\/p>\n<p>Though I thought Mayor McGinn was a more articulate debater than Ed Murray, governing is not the same as debating.\u00a0 McGinn and Murray are both progressives and simply not having the monicker &#8220;Mayor McSchwinn&#8221; may make improving Seattle&#8217;s\u00a0 infrastructure for bicycling easier.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think that Murray will join with those who claim that there is a &#8220;War on Cars&#8221;.\u00a0 One might argue that you&#8217;d have to be smoking crack to believe that there is a &#8220;War on Cars&#8221; in North America.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/06\/world\/americas\/toronto-mayor-admits-smoking-crack.html?_r=0\">At least one promoter of the &#8220;War on Cars&#8221; really was smoking crack<\/a>&#8230; And his name is synonymous with cars&#8230; Rob Ford.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ford.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-485 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ford-300x212.jpg?resize=478%2C337\" alt=\"Ford\" width=\"478\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ford.jpg?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Ford.jpg?resize=500%2C354&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The New York Times noted that &#8220;Mr. Ford vowed to end the city\u2019s \u201cwar on cars,\u201d the preferred mode of transport for suburbanites.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/theres-war-cars-bicyclists-help-drivers.html\">Murray is no Mayor Ford.\u00a0 And, don&#8217;t tell the &#8220;War on Cars&#8221; people, but his name really was a bike brand:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/my_murray_eliminator.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-488 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/my_murray_eliminator-222x300.jpg?resize=312%2C421\" alt=\"my_murray_eliminator\" width=\"312\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/my_murray_eliminator.jpg?resize=222%2C300&amp;ssl=1 222w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/my_murray_eliminator.jpg?resize=370%2C500&amp;ssl=1 370w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/my_murray_eliminator.jpg?w=592&amp;ssl=1 592w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s hope MURRAY will work to improve bicycling in Seattle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So it looks like Seattle&#8217;s Mayor McGinn will lose to Ed Murray.
