But Bikes ARE Traffic&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently noticed this sign, &#8220;BIKES MERGE WITH TRAFFIC&#8221;\u00a0 in Seattle&#8217;s International District:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-326 aligncenter\" alt=\"photo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo-300x225.jpg?resize=389%2C291\" width=\"389\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg?resize=500%2C375&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/photo.jpg?w=1632&amp;ssl=1 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I remember the <a href=\"http:\/\/docusnob.com\/post\/28772893401\/critical-mass-we-are-traffic\">Critical Mass <\/a>cry, &#8220;We ARE traffic&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/we-are-traffic.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-328 aligncenter\" alt=\"we are traffic\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/we-are-traffic-300x172.jpg?resize=391%2C224\" width=\"391\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/we-are-traffic.jpg?resize=300%2C172&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/we-are-traffic.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There shouldn&#8217;t be a debate about whether bikes qualify as legitimate traffic; <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/rcw\/default.aspx?cite=46.61.755\">we really are legal traffic<\/a> in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p>And, while some bicyclists do occasionally block other traffic to make a point (<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/rcw\/default.aspx?cite=46.61.770\">which is usually illegal<\/a>), bicyclists are also the best traffic to have on the road&#8211; no matter who your are.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because motorists pretty much always block other motorists.\u00a0 On my ride in this morning I noticed motorized traffic blocking not only other motorized traffic, but the bike lane as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/blocking.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-330 aligncenter\" alt=\"blocking\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/blocking-225x300.jpg?resize=389%2C518\" width=\"389\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/blocking.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/blocking.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/blocking.jpg?resize=375%2C500&amp;ssl=1 375w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/blocking.jpg?w=1224&amp;ssl=1 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As traffic, I rode outside of the bike lane (<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/rcw\/default.aspx?cite=46.61.770\">which is legal in Washington<\/a>), and continued to the light (where I stopped and took this photo).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what SDOT means with its &#8220;BIKE MERGE WITH TRAFFIC&#8221; sign, it seems to perpetuate the myth that we are not traffic.\u00a0 I like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transitmiami.com\/traffic\/county-to-vote-on-allowing-fdot-and-cities-to-slack-on-bike-lanes\">this sign<\/a> better:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/WeAreTraffic.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-336 aligncenter\" alt=\"WeAreTraffic\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/WeAreTraffic.jpg?resize=431%2C431\" width=\"431\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/WeAreTraffic.jpg?w=288&amp;ssl=1 288w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/WeAreTraffic.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.washingtonbikelaw.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/WeAreTraffic.jpg?resize=59%2C59&amp;ssl=1 59w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently noticed this sign, &#8220;BIKES MERGE WITH TRAFFIC&#8221;\u00a0 in Seattle&#8217;s International District: I remember the Critical Mass cry, &#8220;We ARE traffic&#8221;&#8230; There shouldn&#8217;t be a debate about whether bikes qualify as legitimate traffic; we really are legal traffic in Washington State.
