Let&#8217;s Do More than Plan for Bikes&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seattle is a world-class city for planning;\u00a0 let&#8217;s also become known for our doing.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight (June 5) at 6 pm in Seattle City Hall, SDOT is hosting an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/transportation\/bikemaster.htm\">open house <\/a>on Seattle&#8217;s newest Draft Bicycle Master Plan.\u00a0 We still haven&#8217;t gotten far in implementing or funding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/transportation\/bikemaster07.htm\">2007 Bicycle Master Plan<\/a>, which claimed to be a &#8220;visionary, yet practical, action strategy to make Seattle a world-class city for bicycling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got a long way to go before we are world-class&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/transportation\/bikedata.htm\">Seattle&#8217;s bike count increased by 4.7% from 2011 to 2012<\/a>, but the percentage of people bike commuting is still in the single digits.\u00a0 In Copenhagen, for instance, <a href=\" http:\/\/copenhagenize.eu\/dox\/Copenhagen_Bicycle_Account_2012.pdf  \">52% of residents\u2019 in-city trips to work or education are made by bik<\/a>e.<\/p>\n<p>More people riding will make our streets better for everyone&#8211; safer for bicyclists and easier for drivers who will be less likely to be stuck behind other drivers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good to plan, but unless we are going to act on these plans, why bother?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s make sure the Bike Master Plan is something that can and will be fully implemented.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seattle is a world-class city for planning;\u00a0 let&#8217;s also become known for our doing.
